A New Frontier for a High-Tech Material
When watch aficionados think of IWC’s innovative Ceratanium material, their minds typically turn to the brand’s pilot watch collections. Nearly every reference featuring this advanced composite has been a pilot’s watch, with the notable exception of the very first Ceratanium timepiece, an Aquatimer. The material’s lightweight durability is a natural fit for sport models, but IWC is now challenging conventions by introducing it to a more elegant line. The new IWC Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium represents a groundbreaking fusion, applying the brand’s signature matte-black material to the classic Portugieser silhouette for the first time, creating a modern interpretation that marries refined design with tactical character.
Stealth Aesthetics and Unique Properties
For those unfamiliar, Ceratanium is IWC’s proprietary innovation—a specialized titanium alloy that undergoes a high-temperature firing process. This transforms the metal’s surface into a dark, ceramic-like layer that is exceptionally scratch-resistant, lightweight, and impervious to corrosion. A key advantage over traditional ceramic is that Ceratanium does not shrink during production, enabling the precise crafting of smaller components like the crown, pushers, and buckle. Honoring the material’s stealthy nature, this Portugieser model adopts a full black-on-black aesthetic. The case and dial are predominantly matte, contrasted by semi-glossy leaf-style hands and applied markers, which provides just enough distinction for readability. This is a watch where avant-garde style is the main event.
Dimensions, Wearability, and Inner Mechanics
The timepiece presents a substantial wrist presence that seems to exceed its 41mm case diameter, challenging the notion that black is always slimming. This effect is largely due to the absence of a prominent bezel, a characteristic shared with other 41mm Portugieser chronographs. The low-contrast dial enhances this perception, reducing the watch to a sleek, dark form. With a thickness of 13mm and a lug-to-lug distance of around 48mm, it remains comfortable and can easily slip under a cuff. A smoked sapphire crystal on the caseback offers a view of the IWC in-house caliber 69355. This automatic chronograph movement is equipped with a column wheel, boasts a 46-hour power reserve, and operates at 28,800 bph. Its 30-meter water resistance rating is consistent with the Portugieser family, though it feels modest for such a sport-inspired material.
A Bold Experiment in Watchmaking
The expansion of Ceratanium into more of IWC’s collections is a welcome development. While its production is costly and complex, likely keeping future releases limited, this application is particularly intriguing. Placing such a contemporary material on a traditionally dressy chronograph is a fascinating contrast that defines this watch. The outcome is a timepiece that feels familiar yet possesses a darker, cooler attitude—akin to swapping a classic blue blazer for a sleek leather jacket. The IWC Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium is a limited release of 1,500 pieces and is priced at $14,600 USD.
